Blog Post #8: Retrospective - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (2007)

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

To commemorate my start as a filmmaker 15 years ago, I am sharing a retrospective series of write-ups dedicated to my past short film work that includes brief commentary for each short film as well as a few "fun facts" about their creation.

7/16. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (2007)

An anti-commercial about a young man who enjoys fast food. Starring Josh Rigdon.

Made as a Directing I assignment. I took the time to get it how I wanted it but I flew way past my professor's deadlines and ended up with an abysmal grade.

Touted as an anti-commercial, this film is a strike back against what I see as rampant, addictive and wasteful consumerism. This short film also completes a trilogy of short films that focuses on intrapersonal conflict between a character and behavioral indiscretion involving time (The Procrastinator), health (Meat on a Grill) and money (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).

Fun Facts:

• When Josh's character looks at the time on his cellphone, the displayed time, 12:03, is a reference to the title of a short film about a school shooting I co-directed with my good friend, Cris Mertens. You can find that short film here.

• Most of the Chic-fil-A refuse on the table before Josh's character in the second-to-final scene is the result of me ordering a bevy of items and scarfing them all down just before the shoot. When duty calls...

Festivals & Awards:

• Official Selection at the Slow Film Festival in Hungary, 2007
