Blog Post #86: What Inspires You?

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

What inspires you?

Claude Monet's 1875 painting, Woman with a Parasol.

Why?

  • Cohesion. Nearly all areas have the same consistency of brush strokes.

  • Elegance. Relatively formal attire and stance of subjects; vertical composition.

  • Simplicity. Natural color palette, shallow depth and ordinary subject matter.

  • Rigor. Rules of light, perspective and anatomy observed; light properties accentuated.

  • Mystery. Woman, boy and location unidentified (the woman is actually Monet's wife and the boy is their son but I wasn't aware of this for the longest time).

I think about this painting often and directly incorporate or play with the listed concepts in my film work. I believe any art is just a system of basic parts which, if effectively arranged, can produce a sublime whole greater than their mere sum.
